The Island
Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands located approximately 50 miles of the Northern coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. The island is hilly with elevations as high as 1600 ft which provides breathtaking views of the crystal clear turquoise waters and surrounding reef which is the second largest barrier reef in the world. The jewel of this Caribbean Island is our reef, home to 97% of the coral species found in the Caribbean. It is in our reef that the sparkle of emeralds, sapphires, rubies and turquoise shines the brightest. Not to be outdone by the underwater splendor, our pearly white beaches, exotic fruits and vegetables, lush tropical foliage, vibrant sunsets, friendly people and our unhurried Caribbean lifestyle are in a class of their own.
Our History
Roatan has a colorful history that waives its stories in Indians, invaders, hidden treasures and pirates. Roatan was already inhabited by Payan Indians when it was discovered by Columbus in 1592. Subsequently we became an important trading post for the Spanish trade routes; this resulted in attracting the attention of English pirates, many of whom settled in Port Royal, home of the historical Fort Frederick. In the late 1700's the Garifuna people arrived from St.Vincent and till this day their African culture and language remains unchanged. With the advent of settlers from Britain and Gran Cayman in the early 1800's English became the dominant language, with all the Bay Islands being a British Colony until 1859 when they were ceded to the nation of Honduras, most Islanders are now bi-lingual with Spanish being the official language.
